All of the subjects in this book deal with the relationship of crime to the legal process. But every one of these subjects is a major field of study in its own right. Each one of the eight chapters is typically the focus of a separate college or law school course lasting a quarter, a semester, or even a year, and many sections within chapters have been the subject of specialized volumes—and sometimes many such volumes.
 

The law, then, exists to provide people with rules for living peacefully with each other. The criminal law, in particular, is concerned with the safety and protection of the society as a whole from dangerous actions by individuals in that society. A person who engages in criminal conduct can cause injury and death to fellow citizens, as well as great damage to valuable property. The criminal law is designed to reduce this danger by punishing those who engage in such conduct and by threatening to punish those who might be thinking about engaging in it.
