How to change the name in the passport?

Due to various reasons, I have just completed the name change procedure. Now I want to change the name on my passport, what should I do? Thank you.

Thank you for concerning FDVN’s legal services. Regarding your consulting requests, after studying the relevant legal documents, FDVN Law Firm would like to give you the following advice:

[1]. Dossier on amendment and supplementation of passport information

According to Article 6 of Circular 29/2016/TT-BCA dated July 6, 2016, regulating the issuance of amendment and supplement to ordinary passports in the country for Vietnamese citizens, the documents you need to prepare to amend and supplement your passport include:

- 01 declaration Form X01;

- 02 newly taken photos, size 4cm x 6cm, straight face, bare head with no colored glasses, white background. Children under 09 years old who share passports with their parents shall submit 02 photos size 3cm x 4cm;

- Children under 14 years old submit 01 certified copy or photocopy of the birth certificate, if not authenticated, present the original for checking and comparison.

- In case of requesting to correct the personal page in the passport (adjust full name; date, month, year of birth; place of birth; gender; ID number or citizen's identity card) of the person aged full 14 years or older, submit a passport that is valid for at least 01 year and legal papers proving such adjustment.

[2] The procedures to amend and supplement the passport

Step 1: The applicant for a passport re-issuance, modification, or supplement shall submit an application to the Immigration Office of the Police Department of the province or centrally-run city where you permanently or temporarily reside, or the Immigration Department, The Ministry of Public Security.

Or you can access the electronic system of the Immigration Office (hereinafter referred to as XNC website) at https://www.vnimm.gov.vn to make an electronic declaration under the Form X01. Within 10 days from the date of full declaration in the electronic declaration, the applicant for passport issuance, modification, and supplementation uses the appointment scheduling function on the XNC website to choose the time of arrival at the Immigration Office of the Police Department of the province or centrally-run city or the Immigration Department and submit the application. After this time, information about the electronic declaration will be automatically deleted on the XNC Website.

Step 2: The competent authority shall handle valid application submitted to amend and supplement the passport:

 - For the application submitted at the Immigration Office: the processing time limit does not exceed 08 working days from the date of receipt of the complete and valid application.

- For the application submitted at the Immigration Department: the processing time limit does not exceed 05 working days from the date of receipt of the complete and valid application.

- In case of urgent need of a passport as prescribed in Clause 4, Article 4 of this Circular, it shall be resolved at the earliest within the specified time limit.

- In case the working day coincides with or is immediately attached to weekends, public holidays, New Year: the processing time limit is added to that number of days off according to the Government's regulations.

Step 3: Get results

 The applicant for a passport re-issuance, modification, or supplement submits the application to the immigration office shall receive the result at that place.

The applicant for passport issuance, modification, or supplementation can receive the result at the address registered with the postal enterprise.
