This intellectual property text is designed to equip you as a solicitor with a practical knowledge of all areas of intellectual property law. The text has been written by practitioners who advise clients in these areas of law. This introductory chapter will set the background against which all of the technical aspects to the following 10 chapters is set. This chapter is more for cultural interest than for education. It gives an explanation of what intellectual property is, the different categories and which type of properties fit into which category, together with an outline of the historical background showing how the law has evolved in this area.
